My Home Not Nursing Home Keeping Disabled Out of Nursing Homes

Keeping the disabled out of nursing homes is the goal of a program run by Westchester Disabled on the Move Inc. WDOM is happy to announce that we have once again received funding from Westchester County to continue running this important program that provides support services for those who might otherwise have to go into a nursing home. WDOM will receive $64,691 to help fund two programs: The Fair Housing Program that assists low-income and disabled in finding affordable housing and the My Home Not Nursing Home which was featured on News 12. See how it has helped people with disabilities like Yonkers resident Marcus Blacknall.

Hugo Rubirosa was a former wrestling prodigy whose promising career was abruptly halted by a severe injury during a match in 2012. Now 29, living independently in Yonkers, and pursuing a degree as an ADA compliance assessor, Hugo exemplifies sheer perseverance.

Westchester Disabled on the Move (WDOM) was crucial in Hugo’s process of development and adaptation, offering not just real assistance like jobs and housing but also a sense of belonging. He and Marcus are just two examples of the how WDOM’s My Home Not Nursing Program has helped people with disabilities live independent lives.

“It is gratifying that Westchester County recognizes the valuable work that Westchester Disabled On the Move does to help disabled and low income families into the mainstream. These funds will help to level the playing field for folks who need our assistance to lead independent and productive lives in our county. We thank County Executive George Latimer, Westchester County Legislator Nancy Barr and the entire Westchester County Board of Legislators for staying true to their commitment to these families,“ said WDOM Executive Director Maria Samuels.
